About The Event

The program includes Tom Turpin’s “Harlem Rag” (1897), the first published African American-composed rag, as well as works by Scott Joplin, Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton, Michigan-based composers Fred Stone and W. R. McKanlass, and others.

The performance is made possible in part by a grant from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
